This is your chance to take part in a rip-roaring trail run visiting the local landmarks used by the local running community. The route is pure trail running, strewn with natural obstacles (no arbitrary mud-baths or other obstacles required), just lots of great ascents, jaw-dropping vistas, some hard-packed and grassy trails and a great town centre finish.
Date: November 2025
Time: 11 am start
Location: Kendal Town Centre
Distance and Height Gain: 10km + 250m
Terrain: Mostly trail, some road.
Start line ready! ©Andy Milton
The event is part of the Kendal Mountain Festival, and is organised on a not-for-profit basis to support the amazing volunteer work of Kendal Mountain Rescue Team.
The adidas TERREX Kendal Trail Run route has had to be changed this year (2024) due to the ongoing bridge repair work on Underbarrow Road and Brigsteer Road.
The new distance is 10k with over 250mtrs of climbing.
The Adidas TERREX Kendal Trail Run starts on closed roads, climbing out of the town centre up Beast Banks. It’s a steep start, turning off the main road up Boundary Bank Lane and following the track and paths over the bypass bridge and onwards to Cunswick Scar. Then it’s a clockwise loop to Cunswick Hall with the water station to the north of the hall. A steep climb up through the woods to the top of Cunswick Scar joins back with the original route through the Golf Club and then descending the steep streets and ginnels back into the centre of Kendal.
We expect to be back running on our historical route for 2025 once the bridge repairs are complete.

Race start – 11am

Run registration will take at the Abbot Hall Social Centre adjacent to the Kendal Mountain Festival Base Camp.
Abbot Hall Social Centre, Dowker Lane, KENDAL, LA9 4DN
Every runner needs to register – you will be given your race number and some safety pins.
Registration opens at 09:00 and will close at 10.15. Please do not leave it to the last minute to register, as there is likely to be a long queue.
Please make a note of your race number before getting to the registration desk. Your race number will be emailed to you before hand.
If you have any questions about the event, please do not ask the registration staff as they will be a little pre-occupied trying to register 1000+ runners. There will be a marshal available at the venue who can answer your questions.
-
Your run time will be recorded using RFID timing as you cross the finish line. If you lose your number, you do not get a time… As someone once said, “It’s not magic!”
Do not FOLD your number, as your timing tag is attached to the back, and damage to the timing tag will likely result in not getting a time!
Your number must be affixed to your front horizontally.
Please wait until AFTER you cross the line to stop your watch – putting your arms across the race number can cause problems in recording your time.
Whilst it is a mass start, your start time will be recorded when you cross the start line.
After the race, you will need your number to identify yourself when collecting your baggage from registration.
-
The trail run starts at 11am prompt from the town centre at the Birdcage found at the top of Finkle Street, junction of Highgate/Stricklandgate.
A short briefing will take place at 10.55am on the start line – please be there.
Runners will be escorted through Kendal town centre by a Kendal Mountain Rescue team vehicle on closed roads for approximately the first 1km.
-
The 2024 route has had to be changed due to the ongoing brigsteer repair work on Underbarrow Road and Brighter Road. The distance is approximately 10k with over 250m of climbing
The route is a mixture of tarmac, grass, gravel and cobbles. Please wear appropriate running shoes to suit this terrain (trail shoes strongly advised).
The course will be fully signed, comprehensively waymarked and well marshalled.
There will be a lead vehicle – provided by Kendal Mountain Rescue Team – from the start to Boundary Bank Lane. Please do not overtake the lead vehicle.
You must run on the left-hand side of any roads. With the exception of the start/finish area and All Hallows Lane onto Beast Banks, all roads are open to traffic. Police/PCSOs will be in attendance at the first two major road crossings. On the return to town, marshals will be present – they cannot stop traffic, so please ensure it is safe before crossing.
Before the water station at Cunswick Hall, we have permission to remove the kissing gate to reduce the bottle neck. Please be aware that removal of the gate will leave the metal hinges sticking out. These will be padded and covered with red and white tape, but you must take care as you run through.
The final descent back into Kendal town centre is down steep, cobbled, and narrow paths and steps. They are often extremely slippery, especially when wet. Please adjust your speed accordingly and take care.
We will build 3 stiles especially for the event. These will consist of stepladders and bales of straw to enable participants to cross walls quickly and easily while leaving space for other footpath users. Please take care when using the stiles and obey any marshal instructions.
-
The trail run starts at 11 am and course closure time is 2 pm. Therefore, there are 3 hours to complete the course.
-
There will be prizes from adidas TERREX awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male & female runners,
There will also be prizes from adidas TERREX for the 1st male and female in 5-year veteran categories: 40, 45, 50, 55 etc. If you think you are the first finisher in one of the categories, and we have not picked this up, please come and find us with your race number and let us know.
Prize giving will be at the finish shortly after the first three men & women have finished. This is usually about 12:00 noon.
-
You can leave any kit/bags with us while you are running. Please leave at the ‘Bag Drop’ at registration. A marshal will remain with the bags for security whilst you run. Please do not leave kit anywhere else.
A label with your name and race number must be attached to the bag – there will be labels at bag drop if you have not been able to do this in advance.
You must collect your bags as soon as you have finished the race. Bags will be collected from the front door of the registration venue. You will not be allowed back into the building – the marshals will hand your bag to you on production of your race number. Bag collection closes at 14:00.
All kit must be in a bag that can be closed, e.g. rucksack, drawstring shoe bag, zipped bag etc. Do not leave anything in loose mesh side pockets.
You can only retrieve your bag on production of your race number.
Please note there will not be water available at the finish. If you need water, have a water bottle handy with your bag or with friends or family.
